Running Toward Fires

A corollary to that personal helpfulness is running toward fires—taking your team’s problems as your own. When your team’s software has an outage, your tests break, or users are hitting some kind of bug, you should almost always take the interrupt and lean in to help. I’ve never understood why people don’t do this—my suspicion is not laziness but timidity, a fear of seeming too loud or aggressive—because (a) it’s clearly the right thing to do and (b) it’s an easy way to build a brand as a responsible owner and go-to person in your area. It doesn’t matter if you know how to fix a problem the instant you hear about it—you can try; you just might get somewhere, and people are all but guaranteed to appreciate it.
